Appreciation.
We are now midway through Term 3 and the year is rushing past very quickly. It's important to plan and prepare for the rest of the time left this term, but also pause and appreciate where we are and how we are going.
Congratulations to all the winter sports teams. We had approximately 34 Interschool Teams in Auckland competitions. From this, we have at least 9 Division Winners, and 6 Runners Up with another 3 teams gaining 3rd place in their respective competitions. Ka Rawe! We have another 10 teams in the Intra House Basketball competition. These are team sports that develop all those crucial 'soft' skills that every employer and work colleague wants, such as empathy, humour, manawanui, problem-solving, and mental and physical toughness. This is roughly 450 students developing this skill set who will be better than before as a result of this season. Well done and thank you to all the students involved, teachers, whanau and family, and external coaches. I am grateful for the outstanding attendance of our students during this time. It has been challenging but in the last week alone, our attendance on all levels has been above 85%. The Ministry of Education pointed out that in Term 1 Waitākere College had the highest attendance in New Zealand for year 9 students and female students. Outstanding. We await the National stats on Term 2 So Term 3 & 4 have their challenges but we face them with the knowledge that as a community of teachers, students, family, and whanau we have the manawanui and confidence to be the best we can be. Nga mihi.
