Students at Waitākere College took the opportunity to recreate the Auckland Lantern Festival in the classroom.
On February 1st this year, we celebrated Chinese New Year. Fifteen days later marked the first full moon of the lunar calendar, also known as the Lantern Festival (元宵节 Yuánxiāo jié).
Seeing as the Auckland Lantern Festival was cancelled this year, we decided to embrace the festivities in class by recreating Beijing Opera Masks. These opera masks are significant in the way that they represent the performers' or characters' personalities – we used this across the Chinese Language Classes to get to know each other better!
Happy Lantern Festival! 元宵节快乐!Yuánxiāojié kuàilè!
