Waitākere College

Our Services

Here at Waitakere College, we offer a range of services to promote the health and wellbeing (Hauora) of our students.

Counsellors

Here at Waitakere, we have a team of professionally-qualified and experienced counsellors who are registered members of New Zealand Association of Counsellors. Our teamwork professionally and ethically under the ‘NZAC Code of Ethics’ to provide support for students with personal issues or concerns.

Ko wai mātou - About us: We work through the principle of:

“Me ata tirohia ki te kate” - “the problem is the problem, the person is not the problem”

Me pēhea te awhi atu - How we help:

The team works closely with other staff such as deans, senior management, career advisers, nurses and teaching staff.  Our aim is to contribute to a safe and healthy learning environment by supporting students’ holistic wellbeing; supporting students to achieve their personal best academically, emotionally and socially, by helping them to discover alternative choices and perspectives to develop a clear sense of their own identity and well-being. Counsellors advocate for those who are disempowered.

The counsellors have strong links with outside agencies in our wider community and are able to guide students and their caregivers to them if specialist expertise is appropriate.

Students are encouraged to make an appointment to see one of the school counsellors by emailing ([email protected]). Otherwise, students can go to the ‘Student Support’ building during interval or lunchtime to fill out a referral form.

Our nurses are funded by Waitemata DHB to provide a youth focussed, confidential Nursing service to the students.

This includes illness, accidents, chronic health conditions, Year 9 Health checks (vision/hearing testing), sexual health, mental health and health promotion.

Our nurses actively engage with our families to ensure our students are well, healthy and ready to learn.
