Waitākere College has been awarded a significant grant from Countdown's Growing for Good campaign.
Over 150 schools and early learning centres across the country applied for this funding, and we were one of only 8 successful applications! This week, Countdown's Director of Sustainability Kiri Hannifin visited our Environmental Council and Gardening Club students to tell them the good news.
The Growing for Good campaign aims to support innovative projects focused on sustainability and combating climate change in schools. With this funding we can now begin transforming the horticulture area into a rongoa garden and native plant nursery, developing a school-wide compost system, and creating educational signage for native trees around the school grounds.
Our students should be especially proud of their ideas and contributions to this application, particularly Taipua Kipa for his idea of labeling the significant native trees around the school. We are very grateful to Countdown for the opportunity to make this exciting project come to life!
