The Flow of Philippine Culture and Tradition
Agsūbay Filipino Ensemble is the Filipino cultural group of Waitākere College, rooted in the essence of movement and tradition. Inspired by the Waray word "subay", which means "to follow" or "to track," the name reflects the group’s vision and purpose to honor and carry forward the rich heritage of Filipino dance. While "Agsubay" may not be a widely documented Waray term, it evokes the idea of continuing a journey, much like the flowing waters that define the meaning of Waitākere, “Wai” (water) and “tākere” (flowing or current). Through vibrant performances, Agsūbay Filipino Ensemble, headed by Mātua Kent Panis, brings Filipino culture to life, seamlessly blending past and present in a celebration of identity, unity, and pride. Just as rivers shape the land while staying true to their source, the group follows the current of tradition, ensuring the beauty of Filipino dance thrives within the Waitākere College community, where water and culture flow together as one.
Each performance is brought to life with authentic costumes carefully crafted in the Philippines, following traditional patterns and designs. These are paired with choreography guided by Philippine Dance Literatures, ensuring that every movement, rhythm, and gesture stays true to the cultural narratives they represent in Aotearoa.
