Welcoming New Faces: Our Growing International Community

We welcomed 21 new international students who joined our school at the beginning of Term 1 and our 8 returning long term international students. We now have 29 international students in total studying at our school which is great!

It's wonderful to see our returning students again, many of whom spent the summer reconnecting with family and friends back home. This time away is crucial for them as it helps strengthen those important relationships. Now, they’re back in the school routine and ready for a successful year ahead!
Our international students live with caring Waitākere College-approved homestay families or Designated Caregivers who are dedicated to creating a nurturing home away from home. These families have been actively engaging with our students, taking them to local events such as the Lantern Festival and involving them in fun family activities like fishing. We are incredibly grateful for their hospitality and the memorable experiences they provide our students.

At Waitākere College, our international students come not only for academic growth but also to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture of New Zealand school life. We are particularly proud of five of our new students—Alexander, Haru, Kazuki, Ryugo, and Yusuke—who have made it onto the 1st XI Football squad. Their achievements in sports showcase their enthusiasm and talent!

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting Mr Nagai, the Deputy Principal of Komazawa Gakuen High School in Japan. He met with our Principal, Mr Shanahan, toured the school, and spent time with his students—Kaori, Miyu, and Amanae. Mr. Nagai expressed his admiration for our school, particularly appreciating the friendliness of our students and staff, as well as the lush, spacious fields that stand in contrast to those at his school in Japan.
