Joint winner of the inaugural Te Uru Secondary Art Award
Recently Te Uru Gallery in Titirangi held its inaugural secondary art award exhibition Currents; which celebrates artistic talent within West Auckland high schools. Each school is invited to nominate an artwork by a top Year 13 Art student and the finalist works are exhibited in Currents 2024. The works were judged by Fiona Jack who is the Head of School at Elam School of Fine Arts and Design.
After careful consideration, Waitākere College submitted a work by Georgia Tulloch.
Georgia Tulloch. Taking care of business. 2024.
"In my photography work, I capture the life of my family's panel-beating business. I aim to showcase not just the physical labour involved in panel beating, but the spirit of dedication and craftsmanship that my parents embody. My parents have dedicated their lives to our family-owned panel-beating business and I grew up watching them work tirelessly. Photographing their efforts is a way for me to honour and appreciate all they've done." - Georgia Tulloch, 2024.
Georgia was awarded joint first place for work. Jack said the following about her decision:
“Choosing a winner out of this brilliant collection is not easy, and I decided to share the award between two finalists. In very different ways these two artists have made sophisticated and confident work about aspects of their lives that could be easily overlooked. They have turned their attention to the unseen, to family, to community, and in doing this they have allowed us into their world in a way that relates to our own. Their art is about the normality of their lives and resists the urge to be more than it is. For any artist, it is brave to show so much of themselves, but to me, it seems especially accomplished for artists of this age."
