2025 Probables v ‘Blasts from the Past’

2024 was a very successful year for basketball. But with many of the senior boys squad leaving at the end of the year, a three game series was organised against some of Waitak’s blasts from the past to help the likely 2025 squad in their quest to gain promotion into the big league in 2025.

Game one featured 2015 squad players Rapaere Newson, Callum Milne, Zeus Gobenciong, Kerry Zheng and Nio Sa'u bolstered by 2018 captain Antonio Aziziyan with current Year 13 stars making up their bench. The 2025 team got their first run trying out a brand new offence and defence but the 2015 team were the victors on the day.

Game two was another retro classic against the 2023 squad. The 2025 probables struggled to come to grips with their new structure.  But it was an entertaining game with Konrad Schwalger dunking the ball several times in traffic.

Game three was the current 2024 squad versus Dad’s Army of 2001. Time had not been kind to the team of 2001. But they brought something we hadn't seen in the previous two matches ... liniment. Heaps of it. This turned out to be as much about strategy as it was about remedy. The 2024 boys struggled for the first quarter with the heavy chemical odour making their eyes water, putting them off their aim. Both teams fronted up in a very physical match. But Squad 2001 took advantage of stoppages to adjust knee braces and buy time for the anti-inflammatories to kick in. Right until the last minute the game could have gone either way. But the old boys showed they still have skill and guile, as they came away with the win.

The series was a fantastic festival of school culture and sport. Thank you to all the old boys who made it happen and for inspiring another generation of players to be as awesome as the players who went before them.
