Waitākere College

Battle of the Bibliophiles 2024

We are thrilled to share that our Waitākere College Battle of the Bibliophiles team recently competed in the regional competition, demonstrating their dedication, teamwork, and love for literature! The team of six read and studied 12 books between them over terms 1, 2, and 3. They met twice a week, every week, to analyse and memorise these books, aiding in their preparation for the competition.

After all of these months of preparation, the team was ready and went up against various other schools throughout New Zealand in a challenge that tested not only their comprehension of texts but also their critical thinking and collaboration skills. They were under the pressure of having to complete three timed rounds, which were each 42 minutes and the last 15 minutes, about their knowledge and general questions about the books.

The competition was held on Thursday last week and our team represented the school with enthusiasm. Whether they won or not, we are so proud of them and their manawanui.

Congratulations to the team:

Analiese - “My experience of BOB was incredible, it was so satisfying to have studied so hard for 3 terms and to share my knowledge and come together as a team, I was super nervous at the beginning but was so happy to be in there and sharing our love for books I would 100% recommend this competition to any upcoming year 10s, my favourite part of this competition was exploring books I would've never thought I would read and turned out to be some of the best books I have read.  I also loved the sushi Ms Munro bought us, thank you.”

Bailey - “I am so lucky to have been given the opportunity to participate in this competition. Even though I wasn’t super big on reading for a while, I thought this might be a fun thing to include myself in. Getting to know the others in the group and sharing our knowledge of the books was an incredible experience, but on the other hand, attempting to memorise as much as you could about 12 books was quite stressful. In the end, I am glad that it’s over, though this was definitely the highlight of my year.”
